MATERIALS TO BRING :
A T-shirt or work coat specifically for the workshop
Aim of the workshop :
-To carve a shape in a small block of tufa from a template.
Course of the session:
- Observation of the tufa stone and its characteristics
- Explanations on the formation of the stone
- Description of the trades related to stone that were involved in the construction of the castle
(quarryman, stonecutter, sculptor)
- Discovery of the tools and their handling in an underground room that was used as a quarry
- Reproduction of a pattern on a block of tufa stone from a template (tower, crown, shield)
Pedagogical interests:
- To discover in a concrete way the profession of stone sculptor, which is both very old and
and still relevant today
- To live an experience in total adequacy with the history of the site
- To raise awareness of the work required to build and decorate the castle
- To develop manual skills through the use of professional tools
- To pass on knowledge and technical vocabulary
Why this theme?
-Tuffeau is the emblematic stone of the Loire Valley castles.
-The use of real sculptors' tools enhances the children's skills.
-Finally, this experience gives meaning to the teaching of "discovery of the world": earth sciences and life, architecture, history of art, technology, plastic arts, etc.
Possible openings: The different building materials used in architecture, the crafts, the history of troglodytism in France and throughout the world, the underground animal world, the symbolism of medieval bestiary, etc.
