The wines of the Loire
Wending its way through the centre of the country, the Loire river has forged the landscape of this historical centrepiece of France. Its passage has equally informed the soil - the "terroir" - creating differences from plot to plot, parcel to parcel, region to region.
It is tempting to think of the Loire as the conductor of an orchestra, and the grape varietals of the region as constituting the virgin parchment upon which is inscribed the symphony of the "terroirs" of the Loires Valley.
Many differents types of grapes are used in the Loire, but what is particularly interesting is the fact that most wines produced are the result of mono-varietals: sauvignon and chenin for the whites, and cabernet and gamay for the reds.
